After speaking with the firefighters and police, I approached the girl. I knelt down to the girl's level and gently asked her, "What's your name?"
Behind the sobbing, she replied, "Ella... Ella Fall..."
I softly smiled, "Ella, my name is Madeline... you can call me 'Maddie', if you'd like."
Ella sniffed, "Is it true..? Are they... really gone...?"
I bit my lip and gently placed my hand on Ella's shoulder. I quietly told her, "I'm sorry..."
She broke down, weeping. To comfort her, I held her close and tight. As her tears soaked my shoulder, I couldn't help but see myself in her. That's when I made my decision... I couldn't live with myself if I left her at an orphanage... Much like how my family took me in... I decided to take her in and raise her as my own.
